Street children in Soroti

The basic needs of street children are completely neglected in Uganda. In addition to the obvious neglect by parents and the government, there is also systemic abuse of street children that happens on a daily basis.

The street children of Soroti live in appalling conditions. They suffer from a lack of social acceptance. The children are constantly exposed to discrimination, neglect, torment and abuse. Due to extreme poverty, they end up on the streets of Soroti, where they are helplessly exposed to these unbearable conditions. In order to survive, they are forced to fish rotten food out of the garbage and sleep under cold and open verandas at . They have no access to medical care.

Many of these children were born to sex workers who, due to their circumstances, are forced to abandon these children at the age of just three. This leaves the children no choice but to learn to cope with life on their own far too young. It is almost impossible for them to register at a school . So they are ultimately forgotten and seem destined for a life marked by isolation and rejection, which is why they are disadvantaged in many ways.

They are forced to do child labor and are hired by people to fetch water or do chores at . At night, the children often experience abuse and torment from police officers who patrol the city. Many criminals also take advantage of children’s vulnerable situation and many children find themselves as thieves.

Due to these realities, survival is a daily struggle for the children and their hopes for a better future are shattered time and time again.
